Saint Michaels Chapel, Rame Head, Cornwall
Standing high and all alone on the headland known as Rame Head, overlooking the English Channel and the entrance to Plymouth Sound, stands this rugged little Chapel.
We discovered it some years ago, by accident, whilst walking along the Cornish Coastal Path heading towards the Devon County boundary
I don’t know a great deal about the Chapel. I do know it was consecrated for the saying of Mass in 1397 and dedicated to Saint Michael. The Chapel itself is a little older than that. The location is also thought to have Celtic heritage for several centuries prior.
Saint Michael is now just an empty shell…. but despite that, and perhaps because of its dramatic location, it still has that special feel of a spiritual place that once was of some important.
Standing high on the headland, I guess it is of some importance to sailors, a great landmark for those approaching Plymouth Sound

Gd morning, David. What a lovely little chapel. It’s been built very well to be still be there on the headland where all the storms rage with tornadowinds, loads and loads of rain, snow, ice…and hot sunshine. I believe immediately that this place is filled with peace inside. What a great find.

Almost like a lighthouse, keeping watch over the sea. So lovely and so well preserved through the centuries.

Light or no light you can see why over the past centuries sailors did rely upon this prominent landmark along this rugged coastline 🙂

Remarkable for being in such a weather exposed location 🤔
