Silent Sunday…… Off to a Country Church

Saint Edmunds Church, Castleton, Hope Valley, Derbyshire

Castleton nestles at the head of the Hope Valley, surrounded by hills with names such as Mam Tor, Hollins Cross and Loose Hill. It also lies in the shadow of the ruins of Peveril Castle.

Saint Edmunds is of Norman heritage and for centuries has been and still is the heart of this small Derbyshire community.  Restoration work was carried out in 1837 but nothing apart from maintenance since…so the interior is largely unchanged which gives it that special flavour to its character.

Solid Box Pews, a wooden canopy ceiling and carved stone arch and a hard flagged stone floor. No doubt those hard pews would see the congregation hoping for a short sermon!

Maybe because so little has changed to Saint Edmunds that fact is why it still holds such importance to the village, the hub of much of the local activities and social world.

Looking down on the village from Peveril Castle it is clear to see that the Church is the centre of this Derbyshire village..

Castleton is a very busy Tourist location particularly over the summer months.  Despite the influx of visitors, mainly day trippers, Castleton still retains its small village character.
