Summer is coming to a close….

COTSWOLDS

Summer over the Cotswolds

The last day of August…so summer will now move into autumn.  Gently we hope, or maybe we could be fortunate and  enjoy an Indian summer.

Soon, familiar country-scape’s of  lush fields of ripened crops, golden and  ready for harvest will vanish till next year.  As for the weather, well farmers will still be praying for dry weather whilst they complete the years harvest.

Silent Sunday…… off to Church

aps_405

Helsinki Cathedral, Finland

Standing high above the Senate Square in Helsinki, is the dramatic white building of Tvomiokirkko, the Cities Cathedral.

I loved this building for the mix of  architectural statements it makes……  Simple, yet big and bold, classic yet modern in interpretation, plain at first glance but also very detailed, an over statement and yet at the same time an understatement.  Certainly distinctive. Maybe just simply…  rather grand

After the storms…..

Big Wood , Allestree

Well, after the storms of gales force winds and heavy rain, Saturday was very much quieter.  Still some gusty wind, much colder but some lovely sunshine filtering down, casting dappled shadows across the woodland floor.  It was also nice to be out without a waterproof. I was also surprised to find very little wind damage.  No big trees down,  but of course lots of leaves, acorns and small branches littering the ground.

Migrations has well and truly started for our small summer visitors, but enough still remain providing some welcome birdsong across the wood. It is also that time of the year when autumn approaches and once again the majesty of the tree trunks come back into profile, every one different.

It may be crumbling but the old Gardeners Cottage behind the old empty Hall, still has a sort of welcome to it, beckoning someone to lavish some love upon it…. sad to see it so neglected, like the Hall itself.

The sun did not stay with us all day, nice whilst it lasted, but soon more dark clouds approached.  So far no more rain, though there is a definite threat in the clouds.  Dark reflections in the Lake and the wind raising some ripples again.

Tranquil Perthshire………

KENMORE,-LOCH-TAY-0016

A late summers day overlooking Loch Tay, beside the village of Kenmore.  Wooded slopes down to the waters edge of the Loch, a typical Perthshire scene.

For me Perthshire has always offered the perfect blend of Mountain, wooded slops, Lochs, Rivers, all mixed with gentle flowing Glens, some narrow others wide and sweeping, rich in agricultural activity.  I guess the best blend of Scotland in one county.  Love it.

Friday Again……. I think?

Blacksmiths-workbench

It is Friday again……  there are occasions in these troubled times, when normal is far from normal, that the days of the week blend seamlessly together and even merge with the weekend.

I am though, pretty sure that the Blacksmith and his assistant ( probably have been some young lad who should have been at school),   would know when the working week was coming to its close (probably Saturday lunchtime if they were lucky).  The Blacksmiths Shop above has long since stood idle…gone is the noise, heat and smells from hot coals and the metal  being shaped with the thud of a hammer.

Just for the record…it is Friday…I think
