Castle in the Town……

CAERNARFON-CASTLE

Caernarfon Castle, Gwynedd, North Wales

Caernarfon Castle stands above the River Seiont where it enters the Menai Straights…  its backdrop is the town, beyond the mountains of Snowdonia.

The Eagle Tower above, with its three turrets is, perhaps, the most dominant and dramatic feature of the Castle. Construction of the stone castle you see today was started in 1283 on the instruction of King Edward I.   It was predated by an 11th century motte and bailey. The town also has links to a much earlier Roman Fort at nearby Segontium.   Caernarfon was one of several of Edwards ‘Ring of Castles’ on the Welsh coast which include Harlech, Beaumaris, and Conway.

Strong defences in a strategic location…..   just what we need in today’s perilous world of CV19
