The Hermitage…. The fabulous Art Gallery created by Empress Catherine the Great stands on the banks of the River Neva in the heart of St. Petersburg, Russia. Dating back to 1764, the Hermitage is a treasure trove of Russian Art and a Fine Art Collection from around the world.
But the skyline of St. Petersburg from here, in the middle of the Neva, is one of contrasts. Nor more so than the 21st century architecture of todays City. High rise Office blocks with international names boldly displayed..
If we did needed any reminder of the Cities historical past, overlooking all is the Fortress of Peter and Paul. Built by Peter the Great in 1703. I wonder if he could ever have envisaged that St, Petersburg would, endure the violent history of the centuries ahead, and then the eventual return to being a centre of culture and commerce. A history through which the River Neva as flowed continually.

Evening on the River Neva, St. Petersburg, is indeed one of contrasting views through time.
