WILD GARLIC……

The season is moving on at a pace now.  The leaf canopy, in this wood it is Beech, is now casting its shadow.  The bluebells have faded and are now being swamped by other shade loving plants such as Ferns, or as in this wood….. Wild Garlic.

ShropshireThe pungent scent drifts for miles through the trees whilst the ‘White Stars’ of the flower  heads sparkle in the shade.  Ramsons (or Allium Ursinum) are also known by many other country names such as Bear Garlic, Buckram but Wild Garlic is the most popular…… as it says exactly what it is.

The leaves are used in salad, as a vegetable, used to make a soup or added to Pesto in place of or to augment Basil.  Archaeologists also suggest it is one of the oldest culinary vegetables as traces have been found in many excavations.

  3. Great photo! 🙂 We’re still waiting for the wild garlic to flower properly here – the bluebells only really got going this last week. Shropshire must be getting the right weather!

    1. It has been an odd spring here in Derbyshire and surrounds. The bluebells bever did have that ‘carpet effect’ but started early and strageling on. At the Rhododendron garden visited during the week the gardener was saying the same, some species in the collection that were classed as early hadn’t started to bloom yet lates where nearly over. We will see how the summer works out!

  4. That garlic looks lovely! My family grows garlic every year where I grew up. I like growing garlic and having it so closely available.
