David Oakes – Images
Welcome to our Occasional Photo Diary. It is intended to present images from our travels, both past and present, that I hope will capture our interests in both the Natural World and the Built Environment… Historical and Contemporary.
I have always had a love of Photography; I was trained at Manchester University. That was a long time ago when photography was still involved a sort of alchemy in a darkroom.
My first job was with a Newspaper Group, then I seized an opportunity to move into Industrial Photography for an International Engineering Group. Following on from this I joined a Publishing Company as Travelling Photographer tasked with covering the British Landscape and Historical Locations. This Publishing Company also encouraged me to broaden my commercial, management and marketing skills. This led to my temporarily retiring my cameras and moving into the Print Publishing Industry. Over the next 25 years, Senior Management roles and Board Appointments followed with several International Printing & Publishing Companies. Exciting times, and the Photography always remained a vital interest, having now become a large buyer and user of photography.
Circumstances brought about a n opportunity for change away from the Corporate Life. I began an independent life creating my own Marketing, Print Broking, Photography and Photo Library Business. To be truthful the photography was added as a selfish interest as well as a support for the other business activities. Much to my surprise the Photographic activities became the major activity. My niche became Landscape, Travel and Historical Buildings and Gardens. I was fortunate to acquire Freelance Contracts with several major Magazine Publishers which more than kept me busy working in an environment I enjoyed. Canal Narrowboats were also the subject for one of the Publishers monthly Magazines. It added another variant and challenge to the job….. one day I could be in a large old Stately Home or Castle photographing elaborate interiors, the next work in the 8ft wide narrow confines of newly launched Canal Boat….. they do say that variety is the spice of life, and it is.
But life itself moves on and eventually I decided that enough was enough and so-called Retirement seemed like a good opportunity to freedom from a daily toil, even though it had been fun way of earning a good living…. at time it never did seem like work!
I always wondered why when my friends retired that we could never ever contact them, they were always busy. Now I realise that those anticipated lazy days soon get filled with other demands….. usually family.
But we still get out and about, I do try and record daily and seasonal events across all our interests…. And I hope the results that appear on this WordPress Blog appeal to you.
Sadly , Buster who has for 16 years always been by my side, in the office or out and about, is no longer with us. We had to say a peaceful Goodbye on the 30th March 23
Thanks for viewing my Blog but an even bigger thank you when you make a comment.
