1. What it would cost to build today? And when you start thinking about it: How did they secure their finances for that kind of housing? Taxes from all those that didn’t have too much in the first place?

   1. There is another way of looking at it…they built Coal Mines, railways, a harbour and a distillery. Agriculture was developed and people over a large area were employed. The downside is, as you say ‘at what human cost’….but they did bring the entrepreneurial skills to the region.
