For a few weeks now we have been give little treats of the Spring that is nearly upon us. Bulbs that have been in hiding over the winter have gradually and colourfully forced there way into the open, still a little reluctant to face the cold weather.
Blossom buds on the trees are swelling and will soon add to that Spring feeling. But for me it is when the Camellia bursts into bloom that I know we have turned a seasonal corner. All winter tight Camellia buds, hiding behind the dark green leathery like leaves, have been bound tight to protect them from frost and rains. Now they are bursting into bloom, not with a brash Crocus like colour, but a much deeper and rich blend of maroon, pink and red behind which their yellow and gold stamens are hiding.
Sadly all that tenacity goes unrewarded as they do not grace us with their beauty for long. Many of the petals will turn slowly white as they fade, and should the weather turn particularly wet, the damp will invade each bloom with a brown web of destruction.
Their beauty may not be long lived but is still the best indicator that we have indeed turned that seasonal corner…..soon we will be awash with blossom, blooms, scent and colour as another Spring starts.
