Victorian Easter Greetings….

This is one of my Victorian Greetings Cards that I rescued.  Easily seen is the damage by damp and time.

It is a Raphael Tuck and Sons of London production circa 1880 and printed in Bavaria.  It may well be old but the design style is not that dissimilar to many of todays cards…..and of course the sentiments still apply.

  3. Wow, I feel it looks great for being 135-ish years old. I wonder how many runs they had to make for the multiple colors, if that’s how it was done. Appears to be at least 4 or 5. Happy Easter to you and yours, David!

        1. Without getting too technical. These were probably flat stones that were acid etched then hand finished…the gravure process as you probably read was soon to become rotary gravure where the flat stones were replaced by metal cylinders. Think about it…it was a question of size. Flat stones could only be practically modest in size whilst cylinders could be much bigger. But that a simplistic description. But the finished results all the more attractive in their own way.

          1. The craftsmanship of just creating the stones to me is amazing, and the result is beautiful. True art in all aspects. I toured the Hallmark factory located here in KC when I was in high school. Believe it or not…I didn’t see a single stone. 🙂 It was a neat day for us and very interesting. I did see the metal cylinders. My Mother has a printer’s block with all our families names in it. It’s always fascinated me. Quite a different process but still very labor intensive to make a newspaper in the past. Call it progress I guess, but sometimes I feel just hitting print is too easy. I guess I’m old fashioned, but I’m fine with it! Thank-you for the extra info, David.

          2. I visited Hallmark back in the 1970’s…that was worked connected. I then set up a small network of Freelance hallmark (or ex hallmark) artists for a new Card project we were think of getting off the ground here in the U.K. Unfortunately that one didn’t get off the ground thanks to a small minded CEO at the time. It was fun and is one of the few regrets that that was the one project we didn’t get off the ground. But that is history and also illustrates a small world! Off with two impatient dogs for walkies…..have a good weekend. Cheers
