Invaders….again

Aquilegia….everywhere but where they should be….

_DO82367_00026-Aqualigia

Each Spring we have an invasion of Aquilegia.  It isn’t something we really complain about but these are all ‘self -seeded’ from the wind or from birds.  They pop up everywhere…..but not where perhaps they should. In the gravel, along the drive and in any crack they can find space to root.  They are always the purple/blue variety which I assume must be the colour of wild stock.

We do try to grow the cultivated Aquilegia in the variety of colours that our Garden Centre can provide, we have one season and they are gone.  So, as these rather beautiful Fairy like flower heads are so persistent, why should we do anything to discourage them.

  1. Very beautiful photograph. We have problems with honeysuckle in Missouri. There are actually billboards referring to it as “Enemy of the state.” I find it quite lovely to look at and smell but it really can take over a person’s property if not managed. Many Southern states in the U.S. have a terrible problem with kudzu. It was introduced in the 30’s to stop soil erosion, but is now out of control. It will completely cover tall trees. Cool post, David.

  2. Aquilegia vulgaris – soo beautiful. Just like fairies, dancing in the sunlight, playing with it together with the new leaves of the birch trees. Thank you for this wonderful creature.
