FAIRIES IN THE WOODS

DERBYSHIRE

Overnight there have been Fungi Fairies active in our woods.  This autumn, due to the drought we have had in this part of the Midlands, Fungi have been rather spartan in the woods. But the resent damp weather coupled with the un-seasonal high temperature have stimulated them into growth.  There are plenty of decaying tree stumps to colonise and the autumn sun just adds to the warmth of the day.

This weeks winds have now covered the woodland floor with a carpet of leaves, Fly Agaric usually so bold with its red cap is surprisingly well camouflaged blending well with the gold’s and brown.

DERBYSHIREThis month by way of contrast some Ferns have started into new growth and are a beacon of green against the autumnal backdrop.

Once you leave the shelter of the woods and despite the bright sunshine the landscape now has a more seasonal cold look about it. Yet still some trees hang on to their leaves for a little while longer.  But hayho! it is November the 27th and so far only one morning of very light frost, no gales and little rain.

This time last year we were up to our necks in snow and ice which lasted for weeks.  Our mild autumn cannot last for ever so make the most of it whilst you can.
