BEMBRIDGE HARBOUR
The guide book suggests that Bembridge is a must see location on the Island, loved by yachtsmen and families for its safe beaches. Cannot say that I was that impressed though. I can see the attraction if you have a sailing inclination. Bembridge village is spread over a wide peninsula with the harbour to one side and is encircled by a road leading to St. Helens. The boaters will love the chandlery and boat yards on the dirt strip to one side of this road, I suspect most visitors will pass as quickly as they can in search of smarter places to pass their time at Bembridge.
But like many harbours that have a safe estuary mooring you will find a real mix of Houseboats. Many are in need of attention to avoid being lost in the harbour mud but other who’s owners still lavish attention upon them are perhaps candidates for the Houseboat equivalent of ‘Grand Designs’.
To the north of Bembridge village are some good beaches (though pebbles abound) and Solent views are the choice, but peaceful they are with only the occasional wash from a passing ferry likely to disturb your tranquillity.
It is along this shore line that you will also find the new Lifeboat Station of the RNLI. Located on a stylish and very long pier, the station allows the Offshore Lifeboat to be slipped straight into the deep water channel. Perhaps it is here that you may get a glimpse of activity when the boat is launched. We were fortunate that the crew had been out on a fundraiser in the harbour so on its return to base we were able to watch the tricky task of getting the boat back onto the slip (in reverse of course) and winching back into position ready for instant action.
I am still amazed that the Lifeboat Service has to rely upon volunteers to man, support and raise monies to keep the service available 24 hours a day, everyday of the year. Surely such an important, indeed vital, service should be not down to a charity. Not may of our rescue services have to voluntarily put their lives on the line so frequently. So next time you have a chance to donate ‘Dig Deep’
