October 25th and the Autumn colour has just started to put in an appearance here in our part of the Midlands. It has been a slow start this year due to the drought we enjoyed over the summer months and which extended well into autumn. The big trees such as Oak and Beech have yet to change but the birch are loosing their leaves whilst they change to the autumn colours.
Don’t be fooled by the golden leaves hiding below the Ferns, they have been there for some weeks now having dropped due to lack of water gradually become become richer in colour. The ferns and bracken still hold onto the summer green and like the Birch beyond are just turning now. It is interesting to watch just how seasonal changes do vary both in time scale and manner each new year.
