Woke this morning to the first mist’s of the Autumn. Whilst the mist hugged the ground the sky above was blue and the sun doing it’s very best to break through….and when it did it came with a warm glow which added to the little Autumn colour that we have in our woods.
Whilst you can see the magical light you cannot smell the warm forest aromas as the sun warms the wet leaves and fungi. Nor can you hear the woodland birds. It nearly sounds like spring; I am told by those that know better that birds only sing for a purpose (attracting mates, defensive and establishing territorial boundaries), that’s as maybe but as far as I can tell they were singing for joy…for the pure fun of being in the woods.
Down by our lake the Autumn colours are really starting to show at long last casting reflections on the still mist shrouded waters with a lone Moor Hen out for a morning cruise.
But the full colour of Autumn is yet to materialise; may be we will be lucky this next week but maybe the winds will return and strip the trees before they reach their full spectral glory. This Beech tree filtering the morning sun rise is still a long way off the turn.
British Summer Time comes to an end tomorrow and our clocks go back one hour, the longer darker nights acting as a reminder that Christmas is on the way….at least it should be a good year for the Holly Berries
