Last Post…….

Shop Wall, Chapel Stile, Great Langdale, Cumbria

Not really the last post but this iconic Royal Mail Post Box does look rather lonely despite it bold red colour. But lonely it is not as it is still very much in use.

The very familiar Hovis sign is equally as iconic but not quiet as useful.

But for me the main feature of this gable end, to what was (I presume) once a village shop, is the Lakeland Green Slate used in its construction.  Each piece of stone slotted with the next locking all very solidly in place.  This is very much one of the building styles to be found in Cumbria and to me the most pleasing…every wall different both in shade and pattern.  Houses, Farms and Barns have been built in this style for centuries, stand proud to-day as a testament to there solid construction.

The juxtaposition of all three elements and the colour mix make this one of my favourite images.

As an after thought………

Before filing away the above image I thought I would play with it in Photoshop just to see what could be done to make the image different.  So after passing it through a couple of filters here are two ‘painting effect’.  Not bad but which do you prefer?

  2. A simple but striking image. I love the original/first one but if I have to chose between the two with ‘painting effect’, I’d go for the ‘Daub’ version.

    1. Thanks. In truth I prefer the original (perhaps its my early years training to ‘get it sharp’) I do like a soft image if it is suitable but thought I ought to try painting as so many others are producing some great and different images by manipulation…..we will see what come next. Thanks again

  3. There’s so much I like about this photo! Beautiful stonework, lovely red post box set into its bright white alcove, and of course the wonderful Hovis lettering. Fantastic colours, textures and plenty to make any Brit feel proud to be from Blighty. I like the daub effect photo too.

    1. Thank you. I now have a big 30×20 Canvas print on the wall. I chose the true photo version. It seems to meet the with the approval of visitors. I will contine to play with the ‘painting’ finishes,
