I love the outdoors, mountains, hills, valleys, lakes and sea. But I suppose it is woodland that attracts me, not as a habitat in its own right, but more for the trees themselves.
I know much of the woodland in the U.K. has had the hand of man in its development from the wildwoods of long ago to to-days park and woodlands. But despite our interference individual trees have seeded and succeeded in places they should not, as if they deliberately choose the most infertile and unfriendly ground, to put down there roots.
This Beech Tree shows no sign of hardship as it laid its root foundation in the hard rock face below. I sometimes think that is roots drilling into any crack they can find that actually bind the tree to the rock and make the heavy lofty trunk more secure….neither wind nor rain has shown any signs of weakening its grip.
