In the Meadows……

Clover-and-Grasses

The constantly changing damp, to sun, to warmth has really brought on the meadow grasses which are now starting to swamp out the buttercups and clovers….it is going to make a great hay crop for winter feed for the cattle.

The Ash Tree has at long last burst into vibrant green leaf.  I say at long last because in this part of the country it is the last of all our trees to leaf.  The Oak in particular was out weeks ago….and that is important.

The old country saying goes like this…….

Ash-in-the-Meadows

Oak before the Ash

and you are in for a splash

Ash before the Oak

and you are in for a soak!

So there you have it a reliable country weather forecast for this part of our England…….another dry summer ahead.  Well that is what the old country folk say and they were right last year.

    1. These old country saying (fables, etc) came into being long before we had thermometers , barometeres , the met office and computers to tell us better!. Country folk only had what happened about them to guide them.

      All I know about this saying is that it does seem to work. Last year a wildlife photographer friend in Scotland poured scorn on me when I published it then. He stated that it wasn’t true as the Ash was well out in his part of Scotland and the Oak was sluggish. We in the midlands at that time had the Oak out and no signs of the ash bursting. Well we had a dry summer and autumn ……and as we now know Scotland had its wettest summer for years. I rest my case
