Dawn …….and a Fungi Foray

A very bright start to the day and the Silver Birch have now changed to a pale golden colour leaf which is at its best in the dawn light……

Yesterday I had been comparing notes with a friend whose path we often cross whilst in the woods.  Fungi was the topic…where were they this year.  It has been a damp but warm autumn so you would expect that fungi would be just about everywhere in the woods.  But apart from the odd clump there has been nothing remarkable.

So it was a big surprise this morning to find, not in the woods but out on one of the fields these huge clumps of fungus.  Some of these clumps are over 4 feet wide and form a tight mass about 1 foot deep of lush growth…..

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

I know there was once a big old Oak tree on this spot so I reckon that the roots are now the host to these mycelia.  What specie they are I do not know so will have to delve into an identification book sometime.

Maybe the Fungi season is a late starter this year…we will see.  But what I did spot was this stranded Sweet Chestnut leaf on a Birch trunk…..
