Autumnal Contrasts…….

A sunny day for a change so a good walk was rather demanded. We gave our usual woods a miss and headed for another wood about 10 miles away. Only a short distance but the contrast in autumn colours was very marked.

It is an interesting woodland a mix of Oak, Chestnut (Sweet and Horse) and Beech all interspersed with Pine and Larch….but to-day it is the Beech that positively glow…..

The Oak provide a marked contrast, they are still holding onto the green of summer with just a few leaves ‘on the turn’…..

This woodland pathway could so well have been the view in August but is a deceiving image for November.  Sweet Chestnut sit between the two extremes and shine in their autumn colours…….

In one of the woodland clearings we cam across this Fallow Deer Stag.  His rut was over about 2 months ago.  Now he is calm, keeping a low profile and much more content to eat, to restore his energy levels, prior to the arrival of winter…..

But it is very much the rich golden colours of the Beech that proved to be the highlight of the day and now that night creeps in a positive reminder of a very pleasant autumn day in the woods.

  1. Beautiful David. The vibrance added cheer to a dreary day on the East coast as a mixture of snow and rain are falling on a rather cold day.

  2. What a glorious day, David! This wood really radiates with the essence of England autumn. How inviting–I want to step right in and go for a stroll, too!
