A BREAK IN THE WEATHER

Brock-13

After a day and a half of pretty much solid rain the clouds cleared for a brief sunny spell this afternoon. So with spirits rising we headed to nearby Lower Brockhampton Manor House. Our first visit to this Medieval Moated House in Herefordshire.

There are traces of buildings here from around 1100ad. It important Manorial duties would seem to be from 1200 to 1300, an estate of some size with various farms and its own church. The Moat and its impressive Gate House would appear to be more for show than defence…though I guess it would have deterred aggressive intruders. The House then suffered mixed fortunes, from the Lord of The Manors home to a Farm House then Farm Labourers Accommodation. A period of desertion and dereliction followed until a restoration occurred and until early 1900 was once again lived in. The interior today illustrates for todays visitors snapshots of these various periods…The old Great Hall, Brew House and 1900 rooms all blend together.
