The regimented beds in the Women’s Dormitory at Southwell Workhouse, Nottinghamshire.
The Workhouse may no longer exists but the memories of the hardships still linger on for many.

Very true and it was harsh….but may be better than the precarious life they were living outside. Workhouses were set up with the best of intentions but soon became regimes that became hated whilst creating a stigma for those who had to endure spending part or all their lives in these institutions.

I have read a couple of books written by women living and working in these places – but in Ireland. Horrifying stories.

Hard to believe it wasn’t all that long ago there were such places. Hardships should be remembered but best forgotten.

Susan you are right…like most stages of our history we have that dilemma as to what to forget and what to remember. For some it has to be a personal choice and sometimes a painful one. In days of instant ‘deleting’ I suspect that younger generations will never get to recall some of our collective heritage.
