A Year ago…… A Surprise View and more Memories in the Making

Early morning on the 27th September, last year, our cruise ship sailed into Tromso Harbour.  The sun was bright, just like every day had been on our Norwegian cruise.  But by the time the boat had docked, a sea mist that turned into something thicker, had descended…gone were the views of Tromso and across the harbour to the Arctic Cathedral. It was a disappointment….but then our Guide said we would be going up to the top of Storsteinen (The Big Rock) by cable car…. not impressed!  But he was enthusiastic in his assurance that it would be different and well worth while.

As you can see from the image above it certainly was.  OK., no grand view down the fjord or panoramic views over Tromso but the rolling layers of clouds below us and a warm sun bouncing off the clouds certainly was different and did make up for that earlier morning of doubts.

And thanks to a gentlemanly Japanese Tourist we have a very rare picture of the two of us

After that, the mist lingered for awhile, but the sun fought back and by midday we had a great autumn day to explore the City.  One highlight was the Stave Cathedral…sheer delight in craftsmanship.

The day didn’t finish as the sun went down.  We headed off in a minibus to the Lyngen Alps and with miraculously clear skies, (who would have thought it possible that morning), we had a fantastic display of the Aurora Borealis – yep, the Northern Lights gave us a two hour display.  Nor did we mind getting back to our ship at 2am, cold but still buzzing with excitement

A memory of a September day…   still as fresh as a year ago

A Bit Windy on the Moor

The title for this morning’s post was “Morning Calm”….  it was from the archives.  Trouble is, it certainly didn’t fit with the morning’s weather.  More than a little breezy, a wind, not quite gale force, but you get the idea.

Despite that we headed off to Stanton Moor for a leg stretch with great views over Derbyshire.  The moor is surrounded by trees.  Oak and Silver Birch are the key feature which creates a great approach to the more open moor.

Not many signs of autumn, the trees still look green even though some are a little thinner in the canopy.  Round the moor edge Fungi were making a colourful autumnal statement of their own….

Of course, as we always do, we paid our respects to the Nine Ladies Stone Circle.  Not another soul about so we could savour the mood and moment… it may not be as big as the famous Stone Henge but it’s just as special…

As the wind was getting stronger (and colder) we didn’t linger long and headed back to shelter and lower ground.  Just enjoyed the expansive views from high then made haste.

Fresh and invigorating… but nice to get back to the car and a flask of hot coffee….  and the sun shone throughout so that was a indeed a bonus.  🙂

What a Difference a Day Makes…….

Yesterday it was rather miserable….   rain and mist and a big drop in temperature.  This morning, the sun woke us up and all seems bright and nearly summer like.  Touches of autumnal colours are now a little more pronounced, but I do think that yesterday’s rain has given a new lease on life to many of the trees and leaves.

It was though a surprise, to find that on such a great bonus September day, that so few people were out taking advantage of the weather…..  quieter than I have known it.  It was an extra bonus, being very selfish,   added to the peace and tranquillity of the morning.   🙂
