Rough waters on Derwentwater
Our break in Borrowdale, Cumbria comes to an end and we head for home tomorrow but there is still a day to enjoy. Wind and cloud welcomed the start of the day but as with most of the days this last 10 days….as they say in the north “it turned out nice again”.
So we enjoyed a last look at the woods and marsh that create this wonderful peaceful area so varied and full of life…
Above is the view over Derwentwater from above Brandelhow. Nestling above the crags opposite is the hamlet of Watendlath, no visit to Borrowdale would be complete without a visit.
Watendlath comprises of a couple of farm buildings (one of which is a great Tea Room) and a very famous Pack Horse Bridge over the Lodore.
But before we head back to our Cumbrian base we needed to pop to The Cumberland Pencil Shop for Jean to pick up some art materials…
For several 100 years the Cumberland Pencil Company was centred on Keswick. Originally a cottage industry, using Graphite mined in the valley, it became one of Cumberland’s biggest employers and occupied an iconic building that dominated the town. Whilst the Company still prospers and continues to create great products for artists and designers, the building has been vacated and is now empty looking very sad. There is still a Pencil Museum well worth a visit, a cafe and an Artist Shop….
So after Jean had spent her pocket money on goodies we headed back to our base in Borrowdale for a welcome cuppa in the evening sunshine.
But before we can leave we have to have a few more moments of reflection from our favourite seat with its view over Derwentwater to Skiddaw.
Home tomorrow….but Buster seems reluctant to leave.
