The weather bureau tells me that the high winds and heavy rains of the past few days that have lashed the north west of Britain are as a direct result of the tropical storms that caused havoc on the Eastern seaboard of the USA, circling around over Greenland the heading southwards bringing colder weather to add to the rains and gales.
As we are snug, dry and warm it was time to relax and enjoy a good book and some Vaughn Williams on the Hi-Fi.
Buster certainly has no objection to making himself cosy……..
Carla on the other hand thinks that once she is wet on her morning walkies that she might just as well go the whole hog and take a dip in the lake!
And a little bit of good company never goes amiss so we were pleased to welcome our youngest Grandson, Ewan (now 5 months young)…..
I thought it is never too soon to go to the Pub, so off to the Farmers Arms for his first ever Pub Meal….though his teething ring seemed more to his taste.
High Brandelhow, Derwentwater
For two days the skies were grey, heavy with rain. But at long last, this morning normal service resumed and dawn showed lots of promise..
Dawn, Manesty Point, Derwentwater
And indeed the day just got better with more of a spring feel than autumn…..
Walla Crag, Derwentwater
Oak by the Lake
Skiddaw across Derwentwater
But before we get too complacent there are the odd reminder in the woods of the Gales. Thankfully only the very odd tree was toppled…
I along with many others I am rather pleased that the National Trust has replaced the old Victorian boardwalks over the boggy flood plain of the valley with these more substantial boardwalks made of recycled materials, durable, water proof and installed with a designer curve to blend more with the landscape….it makes a great entry to the hills beyond
Maiden Moor from Manesty Park
Apart from the boardwalk a new bridge was installed over the River Derwent, a shapely design reflecting again its Victorian predecessor that had suffered the ravages of flood, time and weather……..
and a rather thoughtful engraved slab has been installed to mark the opening
A.A. Milne’s character Christopher Robin reckoned that if you stood on a bridge and looked deep into the waters flowing below that all the knowledge in the world would pass before your eyes……nice thought!
(or words to that effect)
Another interesting bridge on to-days walk is this old Packhorse Bridge, one wonders if it is the ferns that have found a good home or are actually holding it together!
But the rains soon returned along with a rainbow…..must dash and look for that Pot of Gold!
