The Weather Forecasters predicted snow, yellow weather warning are in place, and it may yet arrive… but not as yet.
Instead we have enjoyed a day of contrasts and there is nowhere better than in our local woodlands to enjoy the full range of that contrast. Rich blue for the sky, dark shadows where the light doesn’t penetrate and those sombre browns that were once vibrant gold autumnal leaves……all the better to admire the skeleton of this mature Beech tree as it reaches up, its bare branches appearing to claw back the warm sun to warm its core.
It is a cold stark light that has it very own winter attraction.
But the day has been far from all sunshine. Rain not snow fell from skies that suddenly clouded over….and rain in did, in quantity, leaving lower lying areas of the woodland deep in flood water.
But just as quickly as those rain clouds appeared they just as quickly vanished over the horizon…..reappearing at regular intervals just to remind us of the fickle nature of our weather.
In their wake they left a late afternoon sun to cut through the Silver Birch…..
Not a bad vision to remember at the end of a real (but snowless) January Winters Day.
