First SNOWDROPS……..

snowdrops

I know some folk have been bragging about seeing their first Snowdrops of the season for some weeks now but for us here in our part of Derbyshire it has been a ‘no show’……that is until to-day. This little clump first put in an appearance a couple of days ago, just bright green shoots reaching for the light.  But this morning they have suddenly burst into flower.  It might only be a small clump but at least it is the first real harbinger of the spring to come.

Elsewhere in the woods the only glow is from the golden leaves of last autumn that still cover the forest floor.

But may be the talk of spring is premature.  Temperatures to-day have been at a low of 5c and are now heading downwards with a cold snap predicted for the next few days….we will see.

    1. This year has been strange. U.K. may only be a small country but the climate does varied from one part to another. Where we are in Derbyshire last spring was very late, summer long and dry, so long that it shortened the autumn. the autumn we had was not like a normal season with leaves hanging on the trees into December, little autumnal colour. As for winter….well so far only three morning when we have had ice on the car and only two of those had a white frost. Birds that winter here have been few whilst our resident birds are in spring song. May be its natures way of making up for last years severe winter when we lost many of our small birds. I suspect this winter may have a sting in its tail.
