Daisy, Daisy…..how does your garden grow?…..with Cockle Shells and Pretty Maids all in a Row…..and so forth as the nursery rhyme goes. But this year it grows with much difficulty as the rains continue to batter the country. Record levels of rainfall in June and already record levels in July with some places receiving a months supply in one hour! In our local woods the ‘Rain Forest’ has returned a feature that is even rare in the winter months let alone mid summer….
We did get a little break in the grey skies and something called the sun did try to put in an appearance, all be it brief.
It did give us a chance to get out into the garden and see just how things were managing to survive the rains, to which the answer is ‘some better than others.
The Agapanthus has many heads but seem reluctant to burst into bloom and those that do have much smaller sprays of blooms and are also much paler in colour than usual…
Fuchsia have bloomed in profusion and despite their delicate construction have managed to weather the storms very well….
Elsewhere baskets and borders are hanging on much in the hope that some warm sunny weather will return…
And there are still some bright little corners that have withstood the worst and give some interest even on a dull day….
But no doubt there will be some more ‘purple patches to come
and here is a ‘topical’ piece of humour culled from a friends site
(with thanks)….
9th JULY

Beautiful flowers! Our garden is growing, but constantly thirsty. We water daily but it doesn’t seem like enough with the hot, super dry weather. If you and I exchanged some of our recent weather patterns for a few days, maybe we will find a happy weather balance.

If only it were that easy we could solve the worlds climate problems….it does seem more topsy turvy this year than usual. But as they say…there are folk worse off than us.

The fuschia are gorgeous and seem to like rain. I love your friends sense of humor 🙂

Love the humour of the Summer installation failure! HOpefully, some of that rain has landed in your water-supply dams. The agapanthus and second fuchsia pix are lovely.

A beautiful post with all these flowers and greens. Your summer can’t have been that bad, David. Compared with ours…

I reckon we have been spoilt over the last few summers. It is also a case of the rain not falling as normal but as a deluge which has been devastating in some parts of the country. But there is always next year!

Wonderful post, David! I just love the first image with the daisies; the perfectly level upper borders of the fence openings, and the resultant trapezoid effect make it totally fascinating. And you had me actually laughing out loud with the summer installation failure!
