An Old Hawthorn Tree as sun rises on the Brecon Beacons at Harvest time late September. (You may be interested to know that the harvest was not one of the usual crops but the bracken that covers these slopes over the summer. It is hoped that it could be used for bedding for the cattle over the winter months whilst in the safety of the barns).

Great image and I love the idea of harvesting bracken to be used as bedding for the cattle. This is a process of lateral thinking applied to an otherwise useless plant. Hooray 🙂

Makes sense to me…but we will see if it works. I also know that in some places in Cumbria they harvested the Bracken as a fuel supply for farm and industrial heating but it burnt too quickly and generated little energy. The rouble is that cutting bracken acts like coppicing and it just re grows stronger. I am told the best way to control it is to roll and crush it breaking the steams in various places so the sap cannot return to the root. Seemingly that is an old traditional way of tackling the issue.
