Is White a Colour ?…..I ask that question for when I was a young boy (in the last century!) we had compulsory Art Lessons. They were awful as the whole class had to do the exact same exercise, just like the Teacher did. No freedom of individual expression….just do as we were instructed. No way to encourage even the budding artists let alone those reluctant to use a pencil and brush. Yet despite that, one statement has always stuck with me…..White is not a colour….well that is what they told us! The summer Phlox (above) is one of the whitest petals I know and for me is as colourful as the many other summer colours of the garden.
White in nature is rarely pure, more often than not it has a hint, a tinge of colour from its surrounding parts, sometimes yellow, may be green or pink. Here are just a few more floral colours for a warm July summers day, some brash other more subdued….they all please me and I trust will please you….

FAB!! Whatever white is called: it’s STUNNINGLY beautiful. 😀 Besides, the coloured ones bring summer in my little study. Thanks. Really lovely and great photos. As for art class – you are so right! 😦 I could draw and I still was told to paint colours into squares. Ah… times change. Freedom of expression seems to be allowed nowadays. Good thing!

I seem to have read somewhere that the definition of colors is how much light reflected? As you know, white reflects just about everything and other colors in a varisble degree depending on the refraction.
Absolute ‘black’, however, wil – at least theoretically – reflect nothing! Thus it may not be called a color!

But then of course we all know that white light can be split into the multitude of colours of the ‘rainbow’ with a prism….so may be white is the ultimate colour…the creator of all that is colourful in our world!

nice collection of flowers pic.When I was young at school they told me that white is the sum of all colours,as it is.It is calle achromatic color 🙂

Although we did art classes, we were never taught if that makes sense. Like Metal work it was were you were pushed to keep you out of harms way 🙂
