A Calm ……between the Storms

21.10-f

Overnight low temperatures had certainly brought about a change in the colour of the Bracken.

The Meteorological Office predicted that after the first wave from Gonzalo we would have a period of calm, may be a couple of hours and possibly with some sunshine, prior to the second battering of gales and rain…..and they were spot on. As the weather settled down we headed off to the woods to see what changed and possible damage there may have been.

The Silver Birch are stripped bare…..

The Chestnuts, in contrast, still carry there leaves well even though the woodland floor does have a distinctive golden glow……Despite the gusts of 70mph there has been thankfully little wind damage in our woods. None the less it is a strange autumn. With the exception of those trees that have lost their leaves and the Chestnuts that have started to turn to autumn gold the remainder of the woodland is still green.

The Oak still has its full head of green leaf with just the odd streak of brown……

A very welcome break from the storm….but no takers for the bench today…..

But today is just one day, it may well have been one of mixed fortunes weather wise,  we will just have to wait and see what tomorrow will bring.

    1. Well we had a ‘dramatic’ temperature drop for a few nights and the odd day but I guess the wind chill made it feel colder. However the temperature has increased again and forecast is for what have been above average temperatures to continue. It is a strange autumn and not following the usual rules and not sure we will enjoy those richer golds, reds and browns. Still nice to have so much green arround

  1. These are very lovely. Autumn in the UK is a great time. Really appreciated it when I came back after 12 years overseas…, thanks. Make me want to go out for a long walk!

  2. Beautiful, David. Gonzalo was pretty busy last night overhere. But it’s mainly dry today and I even saw a very thin beam of sunlight.

Have a great walk, Susipet. I will go out tomorrow on my bike. To the dentist…. 😀
