Winters Solstice……

Castlerigg Stone Circle and Blencathra, Cumbria

Today, at 23.03 GMT we cross the Winter Solstice…shortest day and longest night of the year. The best bit of course is that for us in the Northern Hemisphere it is one way to summer again…yippee.

The Neolithic Stone Circle at Castlerigg has many legends and myth surrounding its past. Is it an ancient time piece measuring the suns passage through the seasons, a place of worship…..or just a market place for the trading of Stone Axe heads from the Langdales? I prefer the former a place to celebrate the seasons.

  1. I wish you all a Blessed Yule and congratulations with the Return of The Light. As from the 5th of January you can see (sometimes on calendars) the minutes adding the to the New Daylight. Thank you David for these wonderful photos. One day, when I can still walk, I would love to visit the circle. And a whole lot more of England. 😀

For those who celebrate Christmas: Merry Christmas and a wonderful and healthy 2015.
