One Step nearer……

Sunrise

Sunrise….

OK., OK., OK.,   I know it was the winter solstice yesterday, and indeed we have a good deal of this winter yet to come…….   But even so, it is one day, one step nearer to Spring and some longer days of  daylight.

Look to the West….. at Sunset

_DSC0676qqq

A Winter Sunset at Allestree, Derbyshire

(but not this winters day)

For many days now we have been told to look to the West as the Sun goes down on the 21st.  If we do, we are told, you will see the “Christmas Star”…..  more precisely  Jupiter and Saturn conjunction.  An Astronomical event that hasn’t occurred here since 1226ad. and today on the Winter Solstice.

But the best laid plans of man and photographers can, and do, go wrong.  Long Lens, Camera and Tripod, all ready to hand.  Location sussed.

Sadly the weather had a very different agenda.  Low cloud, more like Fog all day.  No sunrise, no sunset, so no once in a lifetime experience.

Arh well, I will just have to wait another few hundred years for the next opportunity.

As always, whatever the weather, whatever your hopes….

The Winter Solstice…….

Castlerig-Stone-Circle

Castlerigg Stone Circle, Keswick, Cumbria

I posted this page at 5.02am GMT.  Officially that is the time of the Winter Solstice.  Hard to believe, but from this point onwards, the days will start to get longer and the nights shorter  Well that’s the truth of the matter.  I guess many folk like me, still think that we have a good deal of winter to come….after all winter has only just begun.

Castlerigg Megalithic Stone Circle, long suggested as being a ‘time clock‘ for the seasons…..   in normal times, like many other of our ancient stone circles, they would be locations for celebrations of the Solstice.

Winter Solstice…… Spirits in the Heavens

NORTHER-LIGHT-N18_00005

The Winter Solstice has arrived.  Another year of changing seasons comes to an end. From today the days will be come longer and nights shorter….all be it gradual.  This year the Solstice is on the 22nd as part of its 4 year cycle.

But for many, over many millennia, the solstice has, and still does, hold both a magical and spiritual significance indeed a reverence for the ” Spirits in the Heavens “

Having experienced the Northern Lights earlier this year I tend to feel that I cannot just dismiss them as solar dust…they feel much more like moving spirits…well they certainly made an emotional impression on me

The Winter Solstice arrives tomorrow…

Winter-comes-to-Stanton-Moor

December over Stanton Moor

Could be a little confusion today…. and it nearly caught me out. The Winter Solstice this year is on Sunday the 22nd of December, not the 21st.  The switch in days occurs every four years.  So we will have to wait another day before those days become just a little longer and the nights a little shorter…. If the New Year pans out like many in the past, and despite the passing of mid winter, the worst of winter has yet to come.
