…………….IS IT WINTER ?

17.1-dawn-and-mist

The morning sun cut through the Sycamore Woods lighting up dark corners whilst creating others. It looked and felt cold as winter should.

Apart from some very light frost and a sprinkling of snow we haven’t , as yet, had a winter. We are even told that December and in fact the whole of last year was the warmest on record….they even added that many places in England looked to be heading for another warmest January record.
Fungi that would normally have succumbed to the ice and frost of winter still seem to be thriving, with new Fungi Flurries on many a dead tree stump….

One early sign of spring is when the tips of the Silver Birch start to turn red as the new growth starts to spark back into life….It is a little early by usual standards but some are showing those early signs…..
17.1-a
Down by the Lake it looks a good deal colder, the colours are muted, the water looks dull…..17.1-j and the gulls are fighting for any scraps that are going…17.1-e

Winter probably has a sting in its tail….or is it that all the seasons have just slipped back and winter hasn’t started yet?

  1. Lovely and you are fortunate to have such a mild winter. We haven’t recovered from last winter yet, so we are happy that this one is so much better. It seems as if summer was here and gone in no time at all. I hope we ride this one out and break all kinds of records for mildness.

    1. Weather effects us all in different ways. last winter was mild but early spring was also the wettest on record. Floods were widespread and devastating in some areas and many have still to recover and some are still out of their homes and businesses. We are a relatively small island yet it still surprises me just how varied our weather can be from one end of the U.K. to the other. At the moment our central location seems to be isolated from the extremes

  2. Down here in the SW, Winter doesn’t seem to have arrived, either. It is a relief not to have had – so far – the extremes of last Winter and Spring. There are more dry, bright days – which are wonderful. It does feel odd to see new buds, daffodils and snowdrops in early January. Also marigolds and roses in the garden have been blooming throughout Winter.
