Not yet Winter on the Moor…

Stanton-Moor-bw

Stanton Moor, Derbyshire

Nearly mid December and winter has yet to arrive on the Moor, the old heather still provides some grazing for the sheep and cover for the birds overwintering.  Usually by this time on our seasonal cycle there will have been at the very least a scattering of snow and definitely some heavy frost….not this year its positively balmy!

(This could be a trend as last year we had also escaped the start of the usual winter woes)

  1. The winter has been abolished this year, David! At 5.00 a.m.- this morning we registered plus 8 degrees Celsius!!!
And the long term forecast reads ‘no snow this side of Christmas’.-
With this kind of weather, we expect spring mid-February! 😀

    1. It has been a strange year. Just to the north of us there are severe floods after heavy rain. the same are3a flooded a few years ago and they said then it was once in a hundred year event. Well this year the rain was heavier still and the floods even deeper so I guess the hundred year theory goes out the window. Just some snow so far this winter over the high ground of Scotland. Temperature here today 9c. As to spring well I am none too sure when it will start….I have felt that for the past few years the seasons have been moving, each one each year starting a couple of weeks later than was once the norm. So we will wait and see what happens in 2016

      1. The seasons really do shift. T%he magnetic North pole is moving in a south easterly direction (which does something to the Earth’s elevation in relation to the sun)
We used to get snow mid October back in the 60’s and 70’s anad the spring used to arrive early May.
The last years, however, we’ve seen the snow sometime in mid January (with a few exeptions) and the spring has started to manifest itself mid February!!!
In another 30 years there won’t be any skiers left!
