The Lutheran Cathedral, Helsinki, Finland
Architecture and Art share many of the same visual attributes…often describes as being…. simple in style, bold, stunning, subtle, clever, complicated, un-complicated, symbolic, ornate, intricate, plain, classical, crafty, sophisticated, colourful, traditional, of it’s time, trend setting, reflective, ornate, and of course many unkind comments which we will not dwell upon.
For me the Lutheran Cathedral that stand tall above the Senate Square in Helsinki does make a bold statement of its importance yet does not over dominate its neighbours. Maybe that is because its architect Carl Ludvig Engel (1852) also designed many of the other buildings that surround the Square.
But how to describe such an imposing and important building….
Simplistic in style, yet bold and solid with delicate décor used to soften and add detail to the outline.
I am told the style falls into an Architectural category called Neoclassical
…….I prefer to say Simply Sophisticated
