Padrao dos Descobrimentos

Lisbon, Portugal is a great Tourist destination.  There are Museums, Art Galleries, Churches and a great many Architectural Treasures recording and representing both Lisbon’s History, but also Portugal’s centuries of achievement.

One of Portugal’s most significant achievement, is perhaps, the period what was know as the Age of Discovery… the Age of Exploration  which ran across the 15th and 16th centuries.  A multitude of the adventures and stories are told in the Cities Museums and Galleries.

On the waterfront of Lisbon, overlooking the River Tagus, is a much more modern contribution to these achievements.  Created in 1960 and dedicated to recognise the five centuries since the death of Prince Henry the Navigator, the expeditions he lead, and those that followed, resulted in the discovery of  countries and continents, creating a map of much of the world, a world that we would recognise today.

A symbolic Sailing Ship, surrounded by its crew of explores, map makers and religious evangelists headed by their leader Prince Henry.

There is indeed much to see on any visit to Lisbon.  But do make time to view this modern Sculptural Tribute to Portugal’s Maritime achievements.  It is a great contrast to the more traditional Museums, that also have to be visited.

Itchy Feet…… but also very Hesitant – On a Thoughtful Thursday

Homeward-bound

The Government’s of the various UK Countries have now published their “Road Maps” out of the CV19 Lockdown and easing of Travel Restrictions.  If the Media is to be believed, that despite the date still being vague and subject to change, there has been a mad rush to book holidays both here in the UK and Overseas.  Travel Companies overwhelmed.

May be its an age related state of mind….but, I am very hesitant to even contemplate travel and a holiday.  I think back to last year when restrictions were ‘eased’, not lifted.   The crowds that flooded our Beaches, car parks overflowing in the Countryside, Airports busy, shipping folk to favourite destinations, on so called safe routes.  We all know how that ended.

I would love to head off… to travel and explore again. I do have many memories that tease and create anticipation…..itchy feet indeed

Morecambe Bay

It would be nice to hop on a boat and head over a new horizon…it would also be nice, just to jump in the car and head off to somewhere in our Islands.  Not sure I dare.  Even with our Vaccinations safely in our arms, I am not sure I want to battle with crowds just yet.

Still nice to remember and dream….

For the time being I am going to do just that…

Travel…. is it a thing of the past?

Sir-Nigel

The Heritage Steam Engine ‘The Sir Nigel Gresley’  arriving in Goathland Station on the North Yorkshire Moors Railway.

A goliath of Railway power from a long gone era. Travel was just becoming accessible to a wider population.  Now , fast-forward a century, and you do wonder just what travel will be like, what restrictions will remain, once we pass through this Covid Crisis.

Whatever the future holds, for now…..

Silent Sunday….. Off to Church

_DOI9737

Good Morning Lisbon, Capital City of Portugal

Towering above  the Lisbon skyline, dwarfing all below, is the National Pantheon.  Originally, I understand, it was a 16th century Baroque style Church…..  but converted to become the resting place of Tombs for the Portuguese Greats.

A peaceful place to visit is such a busy City, a place to pause and ponder.

Wherever you are this Sunday…

Flippant Friday…… Sunny Bergen

ICE 1_01005-web1000x1500U-100

A very Early Dawn arrival in Bergen, Norway

Rain has dominated our thoughts, and to a degree our lives this winter.  Wetter than Bergen I guess.  I say that because Bergen has the reputation for rain.  Well that is what I am told every time we say we are heading for Bergen .

I reckon, I should get free transport to Bergen, and the freedom of the City.  As on numerous occasions we have had the most beautiful sunny weather…..never ever rain.

On the last visit we shared a sunny harbour side table for lunch, with a mother and her teenage daughter.  The mother explained, that she had a weak moment, and allowed her daughter to take the day off school…. as this day was summer! and this may well be the summer ration for the year.

Maybe I need to get back to Bergen
