Once upon a Time we made Plans…….

ICE-1_00956_00028-(3)

Evening as we left Isafjordur in Iceland.  It had been another grand day of discovery for us on our first tour of Iceland.   Like many folk used to travelling, we have over the past few months been wondering if we ever will get to go wandering again.   Despite the best efforts of our favourite cruise line, who assure us that there will be more happy days to come, tales of new ships, changed itineraries ready to drop into place….’sometime’ …. it all seems a little like fantasy to dream.

Hard to be positive, but without that ability to travel, near or far, without meeting new people, new cultures, new adventures, we will miss those opportunities to learn, to be stimulated.  Who knows what and when things will get back to some kind of normal, let alone days like the ‘Old Days’

Only glad we were able to make so many memories…

A Year ago…… A Surprise View and more Memories in the Making

TROMSO-N14_00021qqq

Early morning on the 27th September, last year, our cruise ship sailed into Tromso Harbour.  The sun was bright, just like every day had been on our Norwegian cruise.  But by the time the boat had docked, a sea mist that turned into something thicker… gone were the views of Tromso and across the harbour to the Arctic Cathedral. It was a disappointment…. but then our Guide said we would be going up to the top of Storsteinen (The Big Rock) by cable car…. not impressed!  But he was enthusiastic in his assurance that it would be different and well worth while.

As you can see from the image above it certainly was.  OK., no grand view down the fjord or panoramic views over Tromso but the rolling layers of clouds below us and a warm sun bouncing off the clouds certainly was different and did make up for that earlier morning of doubts.

And thanks to a gentlemanly Japanese Tourist we have a very rare picture of the two of us

After that, the mist lingered for a while, but the sun fought back and by midday we had a great autumn day to explore the City.  One highlight was the Stave Cathedral…sheer delight in craftsmanship.

The day didn’t finish as the sun went down.  We headed off in a minibus to the Lyngen Alps and with miraculously clear skies, (who would have thought it possible that morning), we had a fantastic display of the Aurora Borealis – yep, the Northern Lights gave us a two hour display.  Nor did we mind getting back to our ship at 2am, cold but still buzzing with excitement

The Leaving of Liverpool…

Liverpool-N1_00008

If I recall, there was once an emotive Folk Song on the theme of  “The Leaving of Liverpool”……  On September 20th. 2019, the sun drenched Liverpool Waterfront,  with its famous skyline, provide an equally dramatic and emotional backdrop, and start to our departure, on what would be a memorable trip to Norway.

Two days later after very calm seas, sunshine and blue skies, we woke to a very different, but equally individual skyline in Kristiansund.

The weather was too continue in the same sunny mood, enabling us to enjoy 14 days, heading north, along the Norwegian Coast, visiting location in Norway we hadn’t explored before. I will try to bring a little more flavour of Northern Norway and this fantastic spell of great weather later in the week 🙂

Yep, it was a year ago, but sometimes seems like yesterday.  In these strange times we count ourselves very lucky to have been able travel so freely and so safely.

Silent Sunday…… off to Church

Helsinki Cathedral, Finland

Standing high above the Senate Square in Helsinki, is the dramatic white building of Tvomiokirkko, the Cities Cathedral.

I loved this building for the mix of  architectural statements it makes……  Simple, yet big and bold, classic yet modern in interpretation, plain at first glance but also very detailed, an over statement and yet at the same time an understatement.  Certainly distinctive. Maybe just simply…  rather grand
