Weed it out…..

Self Seeded Strawberry

I am afraid that as far as gardening is concerned many of my friends consider me a lost cause. Why, well when you get Strawberry plants self seeding, the general consensus is to pull them out…..now that is something I just don’t go along with.

OK they come up in the most strange places, cracks in paving, path edges or like the one above rooted in moss on a rockery stone.  So I figure if they are that determined to make a home in our garden…let them stay. From an aesthetic point of view they are as pretty as any Alpine. As for fruiting well forget the supermarket size berries but imagine tiny red jewels…True you would need a lot for a meal but as a sweet sensation as you potter about the garden they are just terrific.  It is not a case of Pick and Mix but more like Pick and Pop.

As the season moves along our summer Clematis is now in flower, yes summer must be here…a taster of more to come

Just to prove the point that plants do the ‘real’ gardening in our patch…these Welsh Poppies, also self seeded, have taken over the bench….

  1. We have strawberry’s growing wildly all over one terrace of the gardens in our backyard. They are excellent ground cover, pleasing to look at and as you state tasty to eat as well.

  2. I would have done the same, had I a proper little garden. But I have a balcony situated at the NW corner of the building getting all the winds and rains. And I have the vine weevil. They dig themselves into the soil of the potplants (also in your garden) and lay eggs on the plants roots. The beetle climbs out and finds another place. The larva eat your plants’roots. Result: plants die. My willow branches did very well, until I discovered a beetles. 6 of them. The hazelbranche died. Seeing your strawberry and poppys I am so pleased you give them their chance. They are beautiful. Enjoy Nature’s gift! 🙂
