Whitby Abbey, Yorkshire
Standing high on the cliffs above the town of Whitby on the Yorkshire coast are the magnificent ruins of Whitby Abbey. Originally a Christian Monastery dating back to 657ad., it later became a Benedictine Abbey one of many that were founded across Yorkshire.
Today it is a ruin and a fraction of its original size….but none the less it is an impressive dramatic statement of its one time religious power. Well worth a visit.
