Decay…….

Beech Leaves

Beech-Leaves-Decay

Decaying leaves are all over the woodland floor.  Frost, rain, snow,  drying sun and wind nor forgetting  the role of footfall, all add to the process of decay, returning nutrients to the soil.

This decay is as important as the action of fungi that  I mentioned in this mornings posting.

I am always surprised that what appear to be dry fragile leaves remain intact for so many winter months.  A close look at a couple of Beech leaves reveals, that despite signs of wear and tear, just how sturdy they remain after all of winters ravages.

To me they still add beauty and a little more magic to the woods.
