On top of a high hill, surrounded by an seemingly endless spread of Rioja Vineyards with a backdrop of the Cantabrian Mountain range, stands the 10th century Hill Fort of Laguardia. Laguardia evolved into a walled village, resident secure behind the high surrounding walls. Today it is the Capital of Rioja Alavesa, and has I suspect has probably changed little. High buildings, narrow streets, wine cellars, Café’s and restaurants….. and lots of historic buildings, including the central church Santa Maria de los Reyes, plus the Abacial Bell Tower, many dating back over the period from that 10th century foundation.

In the main square, where the Town Hall stands, can be found a rather unique clock. I am told it was created as a nod to the traditional ringing of Bells, Bells that not only marked the passing of time, but also rang out melodies based upon local folk music. Not sure when, but high on the wall of the Town Hall is a Carillon Clock… animated and musical matching those early melodies of bells. It is well worth a look and to ensure you do look up the Mayor commissioned a Sculpture……name “The Man of the Clock“. Static pictures doesn’t do justice to the clock and its musical charms. There is a YouTube clip of the sounds and actions. I think this link will work, :- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CRuhRSkNbRU
if not search You Tube for Laguardia Carillion Clock … I think you will enjoy it.

Laguardia was a special place, you felt the stories of the past reaching out to you…. and yet a village living in the present. Lots of memories….. but for me the most valuable of all… It was to be my last trip with Jean.
Remember… you can plan for tomorrow… but live for today.
