Narrowboats are 6ft 10″ wide but can vary in length. If I remember right this one was 58ft long. In the days when these were the mode of commercial transport, as well as carrying a cargo the boatman and his family would also live on board. As you can guess living space was at a premium.
As the name indicates: Really narrow! My old boat was 10,8 feet across and my very first was
8,32 feet across. I remember I used to consider that too narrow 🙂 but what a length!!!
Ooooh! I would so love to take a tour on a canal boat! CD and I were planning to do one in Belgium, but we had to cancel the trip at the last minute. We are planning a big tour within the next few years and this is one of the activities that are high on our wish list. Do you know if multi-day tours/excursions are available on these narrowboats in the UK?
Here is a link to a site that links together various ‘owner operated’ Hotel Narrowboats. I am told that Lady Teal Boutique Hotel Boat but the site links you to that and others that are well accredited.: http://www.hotelboating.co.uk/. This is a start for you to read. But if you let me have your email address I can send some other contact info that may help you plan a trip(but give me a couple of weeks as I want to get some up to date info from a canal Boating friends). My email is do@davidoakes-images.co.uk
That boat looks a mile long? 😀 How long are they really? Do you know?
