Nearly another Month Gone……

_DOI1267qqq

High noon on the 27th February, nearly then end of a month we will be glad to see the back of!   But, with only a little bit of exaggeration, Allestree Lake looks very much like summer ….  apart from the bare trees that is.

The Catkins on the Alder and Hazel Buds are taking on a colour… a small sign that spring is on the way.

As the warm sun dries the grass on the Golf Course (now de-funked) that rich green that the rains had given us have started to fade.

With temperature hovering around 18c, yes a record February high, Tourist have been up early to stake their claim to the best sunbathing spots on the 13th Green….

Old Allestree Hall may be basking in the February sun, looking calm and forlorn, empty windows and down at heal.  In theory it will not be long before restoration and interior reconstruction starts, as it transforms itself into a Wedding Venue.  CV19 has delayed the start, but as I guess it is going to be a time consuming task, a little delay does not matter.

_DOI1248qqq

Many of us have felt sad at the decline and neglect of this Listed Building and just hope that at long last dignity to the Hall will be returned.  Just so long as my favourite Silver Birch, that stands on the lawn in front of the Hall, is not harmed during the transformation….

Maybe Spring is on the way.

The end of February approaches but we must still…

The Blasted Oak……

_DOI0789_00025qqq

Catching the first warming rays of the early morning sun.  The Blasted Oak still stands tall, it is many years since it was struck by lightening.  Whilst its top most branches become more skeletal, as each year passes, some of the lower branches still put up a good fight,  producing a few leaves each spring.  It may well not have many more years standing on this hillock. That will be a shame as its a great perch, a lookout point, favoured by many birds throughout the year.

Warm as this morning sunshine appeared, it was for us bitterly cold -7c.

Down by the Lake that same early sun did its best to bring some life to an otherwise frozen morning…

The Black-headed Gulls seemed reluctant to take to the air despite a frozen lake..

_DOI0816_00052qqq

All in all, despite the cold it, was a great morning to be out…..  what a difference to those weeks of rain,  bringing damp days, that crept into the bones,  I actually felt much colder than todays minus temperatures.

A bleak landscape but looking all the more likely to return to life thanks to the heartening morning sun…

_DOI0811qqq

Our snowfall has only been a sprinkling, the cold has been keeping it hanging arround for a few days.  Other parts of the UK have ‘enjoyed‘, if that is the right word, severe snow storms and deep drifts.  The forecast is that things get warmer next week….  but who really knows.

Was that it!……

_DOI0716_00013qqq

Yesterdays light dusting of snow has all but vanished…. what remains is due to the very low temperatures.  The wind that has been pestering us for the past few days has dropped, the Lake has frozen.

What little snow that remains in the woodland only seems to emphasise the stark, long shadows the low winter sun is casting.

Cold it may be, the sun doing little today to raise the thermometer to anywhere near zero.

_DOI0722_00019qqq

Not that I am complaining, it just nice to be able to get out and about for a short while….  breathing in deeply of what you have to say, is some very very fresh air, I’m sure its doing me good!

Despite the cold, I would have liked to have been out longer.  It is though, best to stick to the current exercise restrictions.

Not sure what the weather forecasters have in store for us.  So far, not half as bad as predicted, we will just have to wait and see.

Whatever the weather…..

Moody Monday…….. A Little Sparkle

Snowdrops-26.1

Not just any Snowdrops, but at long last we have our first flowers in our garden.  But above all, in these dark days of winter, in equally as dark times…. they are a sign that Spring is on the way and maybe some brighter times for all of us.

Till those days return…….

Misty start… before the Storms

_DOI0620qqq

Misty Start, Allestree Lake, Derbyshire

It wasn’t the most encouraging starts to the day. In fact it was a very uninviting morning to head out for a walk. We took the decision as the forecast for the weekend, and thru the early part of next week, sounds rather grim.  Maybe snow !… now that would be a novelty,  increasing this years tally from just one snowy day. This morning it was just misty, some would say foggy.  It was also very damp.  Despite all that, in these restricted times outdoor exercise is a must….so anticipating much worse to come from the weather gods, it was best to get that early start.

For just a short while this morning, it did look hopeful that the sun might just break through…. but that was just some false hope on my part…. still nice whilst it tried.
