Today our nation and many others commemorate the start of what was supposedly the ‘War to end all Wars’ …..soon to be called the Great War. I suspect there was nothing Great about it apart from the enormous loss of life and total destruction it created. We also know that it was also to become known as the 1st World War. Governments not learning the lessons of war, went to war yet again…..and still today conflict continues arround the World.
Today the 4th August, Towns and Villages across Europe will be marking the losses, the sacrifices, that their communities suffered. They said that it was the War that changed the World… a World that would never be the same again. For far, far too many their World ended and for others it could never ever be the same again.
Commemorate, reflect and remember….perhaps one day we will learn the dreadful lessons of war.
4th August

A terrible loss of life. Here in Canada, especially in Newfoundland, whole families and communities had their men-folk wiped out. Canada’s sense of nationhood arrived with that conflict, but what a terrible price to pay.

Thank you for the link. Sad to say that despite the best efforts to ensure people remember the tragedy of war it still continues. Life just taken away from those who have yet to live.
