A BRIGHT FAREWELL TO BRITISH SUMMER TIME…..a day full of Autumn Colour

CA13

Yesterday we said Goodbye to British Summer Time from now on the daylight hours will get markedly shorter and the nights longer. At least British Summer Time finished on a bright note…..the day dawned with Blue Skies, Sunshine and of course the colours of Autumn. Autumn has still to reach its majestic golden best as there is still much green on the trees giving the woodlands a really fresh feel….it is a scene of Colour, contrasts with the light and shade twinkling across the leaf strewn floor….

One surprise was to discover that Horse Mushrooms were just starting to appear. In a normal year they will have been and gone…and I had been beginning to think that the warm, dry summer had not been good for them. They first appear as a long stalk sporting a round globe on top.CA11

It is not long before this globe flattens out in to a large oval dish, the one below measures about 12″ across. they are indeed big and maybe that is why they have the country name of Horse Mushroom (I don’t have the botanic name – sorry)

Yep….not a bad day to officially finish the summer

AND here is one from the Archives. Taken this day back in 2005 and perhaps a more fitting way to welcome in the darker months ahead……

  1. Wonderful set immense colour – whilst we don’t has so many deciduous trees up here I saw plenty with lovely colour around Ft William but I fear they were getting blown away before full maturation – these though indicate a fantastic day out, I hope the wind calms a little and I get a chance to get some similar shots David

    1. Fingers crossed even though the forecast for much of Scotland today is for more rain and wind ☔🌃 It’s a strange autumn this year…in parts early whilst others still in late summer mode. I am starting to think that we will miss out on the mass of rich autumn reds and gold in our neck of middle England……perhaps a trip to Perthshire and the Tay Valley is called for 🍁 Cheers

  2. Beautiful light and shadows…and the colors are scrumptious. I love fall, but it is always kind of nice to cozy up for the winter. Our time change is next weekend here in most of the USofA.

  3. What a wonder it is to be able to follow the seasonal changes from around the world in pretty-much real time. Your neck of the woods is particularly lovely, and I hope to visit it some day. Ours is also progressing nicely, though without the ancient forests to which you have such easy access. And our friends in the southern hemisphere are welcoming spring. What magic!!

    1. I may have mentioned in blogs earlier this autumn that I suspect that we will not get the full colours of autumn this year….and it looks that way. The high winds are stripping the trees before they have chance to change, many because they are all so dry after our lovely and unusually warm summer. Still as you say Magic!

  4. Beautiful. Is that a channel marker in Morecambe Bay? It looks like a ship, but, having walked across the sands 16 years ago, I’m pretty sure that the bay is too shallow.

    1. It is called Lune Light and marks the entrance to the River Lune….in the days when that was built Lancaster was a busy port. Then along came Glasson Dock with its canal link and Lancaster fade in its maritime importance….but the Lune Light was still needed to guide shipping to Glasson. I also guess that your walk across Morecambe Bay was like ours and most folks more across the Kent Estuary (may be with Cedric Robinson the Queens Guide to the Sands). Best wishes
