Goodbye October…..

Goodbye October…  at least after another morning of monsoon like rains, the afternoon turned out rather bright.   Some blue skies and sunshine to finish the day and bring out a smile on folks faces.  Despite that last burst of sunshine, I don’t think many of us will be sorry to see October vanish into the ether.

As we appear to be heading into another Lockdown, I guess those smiles will not be there for long.

Now, it is even more important to…

A New Month and a Change in the Weather…

Dusk

It looks as if the forecasters have it right…..  they predict a weather change tomorrow.  Storm Alex is heading our way.

But that is for tomorrow.

Today has been rather good…..  some showers, but in-between, a sunny late Summers day.  It may be October, but little signs of autumn…

October a New Month….. and Summer Fades Away

Chives

October…many say the real start of Autumn.  But there are still many signs that summer is trying its best to hang on with us.  The delicate flower heads of the Chives attracting spiders and insects all searching for food before the weather takes a turn for the worst.

A BRIGHT FAREWELL TO BRITISH SUMMER TIME…..a day full of Autumn Colour

CA13

Yesterday we said Goodbye to British Summer Time from now on the daylight hours will get markedly shorter and the nights longer. At least British Summer Time finished on a bright note…..the day dawned with Blue Skies, Sunshine and of course the colours of Autumn. Autumn has still to reach its majestic golden best as there is still much green on the trees giving the woodlands a really fresh feel….it is a scene of Colour, contrasts with the light and shade twinkling across the leaf strewn floor….

One surprise was to discover that Horse Mushrooms were just starting to appear. In a normal year they will have been and gone…and I had been beginning to think that the warm, dry summer had not been good for them. They first appear as a long stalk sporting a round globe on top.CA11

It is not long before this globe flattens out in to a large oval dish, the one below measures about 12″ across. they are indeed big and maybe that is why they have the country name of Horse Mushroom (I don’t have the botanic name – sorry)
CA10

Yep….not a bad day to officially finish the summer

AND here is one from the Archives. Taken this day back in 2005 and perhaps a more fitting way to welcome in the darker months ahead……

Farewell October

Farewell October….it has been a strange month and in consequence a very different autumn.  The Met. Office seem to agree, and whilst the official months statistics are still to be finalised they are reporting that we have enjoyed temperatures higher than the average and rain fall also higher than the average. But the sun also provided above average hours of delight.

Early morning by the Lake and it was sparkling once again, but now just a little of that missing autumnal colour had arrived……

But October ends with most of our deciduous trees still in green leaf.  True some have shed all their leaves in the wind but most still have a full head.  Search in the woods and you can now find more clues that autumn is here and I must agree that those clues are now becoming more obvious….

Autumns colours are now more pronounced and berries and fungi still abound….

It will be interesting to see what November has in store…will it be another ‘unusual’ month.

THE GLOVE SAGA (Season Two)

Regular followers of this Blog will know that last year I ‘discovered’  enough ‘lost’ Gloves to outfit a small town.  You will also recall that all the adult gloves which were the majority were all left handed gloves.  Of all the gloves found only two were children’s gloves and they were right hand gloves…..we may never know why!

Well the Glove Saga continues this season….but is there perhaps a change?  The first find is a child’s glove and surprise surprise, it is a left  glove for a change….is this the start of a switch or just an anomaly….stay tuned!…..
