The Old Stables
On the face of it theses old stables at a Derbyshire Stately Home should not be “Creepy”.
It is what you don’t see but feel when you enter the stables that is so creepy. Even on a hot dry day there is a creeping cold feel to the air…and there is a slight breeze…..and you can almost hear the sound of snorting and heavy breathing from past occupants of each of the stalls.
Then of course there is that smell…..even after so many years out of action and no doubt much cleaning, that horsey aroma still lingers. To me its feels “Creepy”

What’s creepy to me is that horses have been forced to live their entire lives (24/7) standing ‘uphill’?
I see the gain in a tilting floor, but that may be acchieved by an elevation factor of 1 degree (like in our showers)

I fear the image rather makes the tilt look steep. The angle to the wooden stall divider is far steeper than the floor which is really quite gentle.

Good to hear! It looked to be 5-6 degrees at least.

I thought I was the only one thinking these horses must have lived on a tilted floor. Poor creatures. It must hev been very difficult for them. In fact, some may even have suffered to be housed this way. But it could be an optical illusion. What is know about the way these horses were treated? Is that known? As I would think you could be picking up a negative energy if there were abused by their handlers. Of course there is nothing you can do now, but maybe, when you visit a nearby church, you could burn a candle for them. Maybe next time this feeling has dissappeared….

I rather think these horses were well treated…they were the ‘posh’ horses for the owner and guests to ride and a good horse was an important part of their daily lives. The working estate horses were stabled in adjacent buildings much more humble in layout. As to the slope see my reply to Seenorway

Cool image, David. I’ve always found old stables and barns to be a bit creepy, too.

Well I guess that if they could speak they could tell a tale or two 😊
