The Smallest House in Wales and Great Britain
Standing on the Quay in the shadow of Conwy Castle is this very tiny house. Squashed between a terrace of houses, overlooking the Conwy Estuary, this house and its neighbours were once fishermen’s homes
This one does have the honour of being the smallest house in Great Britain (and endorsed by the Guinness Book of Records) consists of only two rooms, one up one down….. and only 1.8 meters wide.
Built in the 16th century it was lived in until 1900’s. The last owner was a Robert Jones, a local fisherman, was rather tall. Standing at 1.9 meters high he had to stoop in the rooms and curl up in his narrow bed. But in 1900’s the local Council made the decision that the house was unfit for human habitation.
So there you have a little of the history….now it is a ‘tourist attraction’ and worth a peak inside.

Great photo. I think NYC has a couple really small houses like the one you captured. Wonderful. 😀

I love the small house; we visited 20 years or so ago when there was no sight of any tourist shop. And I seem to remember that the colour of the house was different (will have to check as it got me thinking on this now!).

Cannot remember when it changed colour, certainly a long time ago. But it has been open for visitors for well over 50 years or more, and sold postcards and novelty items brought out onto the quay when weather favourable. Still hard to imagine anyone able to live there…. but I guess needs must in the bad old days 😊

Is this what you can call : a houselet? Hope I’m correct here?

Not heard that word before 🙂

I can’t imagine living in that tiny house and how uncomfortable it would be. But…it would be better than having no house to live in at all, wouldn’t it? 🙂

I guess from the 16th century and until the 19th it would probably have been a welcome home and a luxury….particularly when during that period many families lived in just one room. I am 6ft tall and found it difficult just to move around. 🙂

What fun! People were much smaller in previous centuries.

You are right, they were indeed…..however Robert Jones who was the last to live in the house (and he did for many years) was over 6ft 3inches tall. I guess that might have been the added reasons for the Council declaring the house unfit for human habitation. Strange as it maybe the house is still ‘interesting’ to visit. 🙂
