Conway Castle, North Wales

Conway Castle is just one in a ring of Castles built by King Edward 1st of England, in an attempt to secure the Principality of Wales.  It followed the death in 1282 of Llywelyn ap Gruffordd the influential Welsh Leader. The Castle construction started in 1283 and we are told only took 3 years to complete. It included a Town Wall to add to the security to this already coastal protected location.  Indeed the location high above Conway Bay at the mouth of the River Conway is not just imposing and a statement of of one time power, but an iconic view and Tourist draw.

Was the ring of Castles a success in subduing the Principality is debatable.  The Welsh never accepted English Rule and the notorious Owen Glyn Dwr lead many a rebellion….. that together with the Civil Wars created a turbulent history.

Maybe now, with  a Welsh Assembly and a determination by its population to retain the Welsh language, indicates that the strive for independence continues.

Conway Castle is nearly 8 centuries old, yet it has been integrated into the modern world.  First was Thomas Telford’s Chain Suspension Bridge built in 1826 spanning the River Conway….

This was followed by a covered Rail Bridge for the then ‘new’ rail network, a vital link for goods was created….. and of course the new facility for tourist travel.  Even in more recent times a new motor expressway was constructed over the river….  surprisingly all seemingly merge tastefully with the ancient Castle and its surrounds….

If the Castle is not enough for you… then an explore of the Town and the harbour are very worth while… enjoy…

No matter where you are today…. and as always….
