Bodnant Gardens, Conway Valley, North Wales
Bodnant (or as it was once known Bodnod) is a sprawling agricultural and woodland estate in the Conway valley, above the River Conway at is mouth, surrounded by mountain views. Idyllic, so no surprise that this became the beloved home of the McLaren Family. Credit must go to Henry Pochin for his part in creating these gardens, along with some skilled landscaper, back in 1874.

I said gardens, plural for this is combination of gardens.

Surrounding the House are the more formal gardens. Specimen Trees, Herbaceous Borders and Rose Terraces. plus some secret corners

Pause by the Rose Terrace before exploring further, then onto the Lily Ponds

Then to calm the senses, its into the Woodland Glades, Waterfalls and Streams, old Mill and Bridges that take you on a winding wander…

Whilst the House and Estate of Bodnant is still the McLaren home, the gardens, have since 1949, been in the care of the National Trust. Indeed Bodnant was one of the very first gardens to be taken into the care of the Trust, Previously the Trust interest had been limited to Houses. It was Henry Mclaren who lobbied and persuaded the Trust to take on important Gardens for their own merit. In the case of Bodnant, I am pleased that along with so many others, we can enjoy the beauty of these gardens in these mountains surrounds.

Wherever you are this weekend, at home or exploring your own treasured place…. always….

We visited 20 years ago, were stunned then. Since then even more care has been applied and on this first return visit it did take our breath away.

Oh my goodness, what an incredible place to visit. Each photo made me feel like I was along. And it reminded me quite a bit of the Biltmore Estate here in the USA tucked up in the North Carolina mountains.
